I've waited a long time to be able to say this but hopefully it's been worth it. We now have our own weather station situated near Bald Hill relaying information via the web-site or (now available) UHF radio. You can access the displays by clicking on the 'LIVE Weather Station' menu item on the web-site. You will need a copy of the Macromedia/Adobe Flash plug-in to be able to view the results (already loaded in most peoples browsers). The data is continously updated and should give an excellent indication of the weather conditions at Stanwell Park, which can sometimes be quite different from the Bureau of Meterology station at Bellambi. This is still a 'work in progress' and some tuning left to do so there are a few points that Steve Joyce has mentioned that you should bare in mind when looking at the data.
- From North to North West direction the wind speed reads very low due to shadowing affect of trees; SW, SE, S, E is good. - Some rotor in N-NW direction will cause vane to flick around somewhat. - Very strong winds in Southerly gusts also causes some flicking around of the weather vane. For those of us who don't live close to Stanwell this will hopefully be a big benefit and is a good example of how we are using the membership subscriptions. Steve and Mark Mitsos have now set up a UHF 'wind talker' that reads out the current wind strength and direction using a synthesised voice (Karen) so that people on the hill can get accurate wind readings also. To access this, tune your radio to channel 16 and use it to transmit two short bursts. After a couple of seconds you should hear Karen reading the data to you.

An announcement to all those people who have asked to be able to join/renew their membership on the club website (www.flystanwell.com). Well if you have a credit card or bank account and an email address then you're in business!
If you go to the home page of the website and click on the 'Club Membership' menu item you will now see an 'online payments' options. Follow the intructions displayed and it will take you to the part of the site that lets you either join or renew your membership. Renewing your membership is the most straightforward, simply choose your name from the membership list and enter your email address. If your name isn't on the list then you're no longer on the membership database, probably because your membership has elapsed; you will need to re-join as a new member again. New members are asked to enter their full details e.g. Name, Address, HGFA membership number (the same as requested on the current paper form). Once this has been completed both new and renewing members will be shown a payments screen with the option of choosing their membership type (Full, Concession or Family Member). We have chosen to use Paypal(www.paypal.com) as our payment processing partner. If you have a Paypal account already then just confirm your details and you're almost finished. If you don't or you've never even heard of them then don't worry you can just use your credit card, Paypal take the payment from you and pass it on to us. This will take place on the Paypal website but once you're finished you should get returned to our website.

Round three of the inter-club comp saw the best conditions and the best flying to date. It was the Newcastle club's turn to host the event and the venue this time was to be the Hunter Valley. An excellent turnout saw at least thirty pilots turn up at Freemans Waterhole. Most of the Sydney area clubs were represented: Stanwell Park, Illawara, Sydney, Northern Beaches, Blue Mountains plus pilots from Canberra Club and The Dusties and of course Newcastle - and that's only the ones I know! Because most pilots are members of at least two clubs it was difficult to say who was representing who; but of the Stanwell regulars, I recognised Daniel and Bianca, Sarbsy, Andrew, Paulo Maggot, Curt and Tim. The site picked was Brokenback, probably because it's one of the most reliable sites to get a good flight from; unfortunately it's got a fairly small set-up area so it was going to be a squeeze to fit us all in.
I gave a lift to Andrew, Neil Evans (Blue Mountains - He's the one organising the comp but wasn't flying) and Dawson Brown (Blue Mountains). We were one of the last ones there so we were way back in the bushes setting up but at least it looked like a good day, pretty hot and not much wind. I've been to Broke before and not flown; it's not the place you want to be caught in a headwind in a floater scratching your way to the bomb-out which is a long way away over nothing but trees. Prophetic words but it looked as good as I've seen it that day.
